Initial Setup

Once you have the bin built & placed where it’s going to go, the rest is easy.  You just fill it up with bedding.  I recommend using a mixture of hydrated peat moss and deciduous tree leaves.  If you cannot find that quantity of leaves, just use peat moss.  Be sure to soak it in water overnight, then squeeze out the water.

Though many composting instructions recommend newspaper, I don’t recommend it, mainly because it dries out easily.  And though I’ve not researched it, it seems the ink would not be good for the worms or the soil.

You now just need to get a pound or two of worms (buy online or locally).   Dig a hole in the bedding, add kitchen scraps, put the worms on top, & cover with bedding.  Be sure to read the article: The Feeding Cycle.

Another thing about bedding that is not normally mentioned is that after approx. 9-12 months, you don’t need bedding anymore.  The worms will have eaten the bedding and the scraps, turning everything into castings.  At that point, you dig the feeding hole in castings, and cover it with castings.
