Keeping out Rodents
If your bin is outside, be aware that it is likely to attract the attention of mice or rats. Not to worry, though, there are ways to keep rodents out of your bin. For many years, simply putting my wood bin up on 4 concrete blocks did the trick. If the bin is far enough away from anything they can climb up on, this should work. In my case however, they must gotten more daring & began jumping from the nearby table. That’s my best guess. It took me a while before I came up with the solution.
Here you see 1/4″ hardware cloth on on both sides of the bin. It’s stapled at the top & bottom, & attached to the wall with concrete caulk. I used 10″ roofing flashing on the outside edges, folded down the middle to make a V shape that’s slipped over the edge. This is to prevent them from climbing from one side to the other. I’m not certain the flashing is necessary, but they were outsmarting many of my ideas, and at that point I was just pulling out all the stops.
Another measure I took, which would really be easier if done when first constructed, is to place the bin on a 3/4″ piece of plywood covered with 1/4″ hardware cloth on the bottom. Again, that too may have been unnecessary, because as mentioned, for many years, just having the bin on concrete blocks prevented the intrusion. Had I stuck to the scientific method, I would have changed only one variable at a time.
